Describe the assistance that matters

Tell us about bathing, dressing, toileting, meals, medication support, mobility, and any nighttime needs. Be specific about what the person does independently and where another person helps. Include preferences such as privacy, meals, pets, language, routines, and family involvement.

If the situation includes oxygen, injections, equipment, two-person assistance, or another specialized need, identify it early. The receiving provider must confirm whether and how it can support that need under the applicable rules and its own capabilities.

Compare the proposed setting

Some families want an apartment-style community; others want to explore a smaller home. The meaningful comparison is the actual staffing and service arrangement, not a promise attached to the building size. Read about residential care homes and Arizona settings.

Make the quotes comparable

Ask what the monthly offer includes after assessment, which costs are separate, and what can change. For a couple, confirm each person's housing and care charges. Use Arizona cost research for context.

Ask about the next change, not just today's move

How would the provider respond if assistance increased? What would trigger reassessment, a price change, or a conversation about moving? These are important questions before choosing a room, even when the current needs seem straightforward.

What CareWise does

We help research potential options, compare provider information, and coordinate tours and placement communication. The provider conducts its assessment and sets the admission and service terms. The resident and authorized decision-makers make the choice.

Prepare for a first conversation

Bring the preferred location, approximate timing, available monthly budget, and a description of support needs. You can start without complete records. Share sensitive documents only through the appropriate authorized intake route.

When assisted living may not be the right fit

We'll tell you when another setting may serve your loved one better. Common reasons include:

  • Someone needs ongoing skilled nursing care that an assisted living provider can't offer.
  • Dementia-related needs call for a secured memory care setting.
  • A smaller residential care home would suit the person better than a large building.
  • Support at home, with in-home care, may still be workable and preferred.
