The California Assisted Living Waiver
What the waiver covers
The waiver addresses care services and care coordination. It does not cover the room and board portion of an RCFE, which the participant remains responsible for, typically from Social Security or other income.
Where it operates
The waiver operates in designated counties and only in facilities that have chosen to participate and have capacity. Availability differs across Northern California, and a community that participates may still have a waiting list.
What families should plan for
- Enrollment is not instant. Plan for the period between application and placement.
- Participating settings are a subset of the market — the search list will be shorter.
- The participant still pays room and board, so income still matters to the plan.
- A move may be required if the current community does not participate.
