Paying for Assisted Living in California
Private pay
Most families combine Social Security, pension income, retirement withdrawals, and sometimes home sale proceeds. California communities licensed as Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly typically charge a base rate plus a care level fee that is reassessed over time.
Long-term care insurance
Read the policy for the covered setting type, the daily or monthly maximum, the elimination period, and any inflation rider. Some older policies were written around nursing facilities and treat licensed assisted living differently.
VA benefits
Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for pension benefits, including Aid and Attendance, that supplement private pay. See our VA benefits and senior living page.
Medi-Cal programs
Medi-Cal does not pay the room and board portion of assisted living. In some counties, the Assisted Living Waiver may help cover care services for participants in participating facilities. Both pages below go deeper.
Building a sustainable budget
- Price the base rate and the likely care level separately; ask how care levels are scored.
- Ask about community or move-in fees and typical annual increases.
- Ask what happens if funds run out — whether the community accepts the Assisted Living Waiver, and under what conditions.
- Consider whether a nearby county materially changes what your budget can buy.
