Awake staff vs. asleep staff
Awake overnight means a caregiver is up and working through the night. Asleep overnight means a caregiver is in the building and responds when called or at scheduled checks. Larger centers almost always staff awake overnight; smaller homes vary.
When awake overnight staff matters most
- Getting up at night to use the bathroom and needing help to do it safely.
- A history of falls at night.
- Medication or care needed during the night.
- Confusion, wandering or exit-seeking.
Wandering and exit-seeking at night
If Mom wanders or tries to leave at night, ask how the home is secured, how staff are alerted when a door opens, and who is awake to respond. A home licensed for directed care serves residents who can't recognize danger; memory care may be the better fit.
Questions to ask every home
- Is overnight staff awake or asleep?
- How many caregivers are on overnight, and for how many residents?
- How do residents call for help, and how quickly does staff respond?
- What happens if someone falls at night?
- Does overnight care change the monthly price?
